ICE Black Box iPhone App

April 19, 2013 by Karen | 1 Comment | Filed in Review

My oldest son, with special needs, was involved with an attack by a bully at school several years ago, when he was in Kindergarten. He is finally back in school, and all three of my boys attend the same school right now, so they are able to look out for one another. However, in a couple of years, he will be advancing to the Middle School, alone for a year, until Joshua also advances. The teachers at staff at the current school do a magnificent job of protecting these students, but I still will always worry about them. The new ICE Black Box App releasing today, is something I’ve downloaded to look into further, which may give me a peace of mind.

This app will help fend off attacks, because if the child feels danger approaching, they can launch the app, streaming live Audio AND video of the encounter, to a secure off site server, there is no way for it to be deleted. Bullies and other offenders will immediately lose their anonymity. If the attacker continues their threatening behavior, the victim can call 911 by clicking on one icon, allowing authorities to respond quickly to come to their aid.

This app is not only for children though. It’s something that can help keep us all safe while shopping or running errands. Should someone try to harm you, you can quickly launch this app to help get evidence or prevent the crime. It’s also something that could be lifesaving for those who might be in a situation where domestic violence occurs.

I feel it’s important to raise awareness for this app for a couple of reasons. First, I feel like it’s something that would benefit my own children in keeping them safe. Second, by raising awareness, bullies will find out that this app exists, and hopefully consider the consequences of their actions and make a better choice for everyone involved.

For more information, please visit the ICE Black Box Website, Facebook Page, or Follow them on Twitter.

Disclosure: I received a code to download this app for free in order to facilitate this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Nature’s Sleep Slippers #BlogBoost

April 2, 2013 by Karen | 4 Comments | Filed in Review

Today in the Blog Boost Challenge, we’re writing about something we love. I love these Nature’s Sleep Slippers. As you can see from the photo above, taken today, my little feet are super swollen, and even socks are uncomfortable. I am so very thankful to have found my slippers who were lost in the million packing boxes after the move! I’m also wearing some blue PJ Pants around the house in honor of Light It Up Blue for Autism Awareness Day :) Y’all just cannot grasp how delightful these slippers are. If I am in my house, you can guarantee these are on my feet. I’m also having some dizzy spells, which go well with my lifelong clumsiness.  (more…)

Olay Total Effects @OlayUS #CCcream

March 8, 2013 by Karen | 43 Comments | Filed in Review

I have to tell you, I have fair skin. FAIR SKIN. I get sunburned so ridiculously easy, and with my allergy problems in conjunction, it means I have to be very, very careful when I am in the sun. With my most recent allergy problems affecting my face, I’ve been seeing an allergist, and slowly testing out products on small areas to find something that works well to protect me, yet doesn’t cause a reaction. I was thrilled when I was asked to try out the Olay Total Effects CC Cream, because I had already spotted some at Walmart on a recent shopping trip, and added it to my list of items I want to try. Yes, I take pictures and have a private album on Google+ of my wishlist :) I even made part of it public, just so you could see it. I took the pics on Jan 28.

There were 2 other Olay Products that made it into my basket on that trip! What? Y’all don’t take pictures of stuff you want to buy AND actually buy in the store? :) Anyway, I accepted the offer to try this out from @OlayUS, and this is what they sent me:

Inside the box on the right was a very nice bag, and behind it was a thumb drive AND a gift card for me to host a giveaway for one of you lucky readers :)

My thoughts: This worked great! I haven’t had ANY reaction, and that’s saying a lot with my recent issues. I am also hyper sensitive to the sun at the moment due to multiple rounds of Prednisone, and this has prevented me from getting a sunburn. My skin is SO fair that I can, in fact, get a sunburn year round, even while driving around in the car, so it’s essential that I have a quality moisturizer with sunscreen in it. My skin is looking and feeling better after just a couple of weeks using this product. No more dry skin on my face, and my skin just FEELS softer. Combined with the other Total Effects products that I’d purchased on my own prior to receiving this, my skin has shown so much improvement. They’ve definitely sold me on the entire line.

Olay CC Cream – Total Effects Tone Correcting Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15, fights fine lines and wrinkles, uneven tone, age spots, and dryness. At the same time, it also works to improve surface cell turnover with gentle exfoliation, strengthen skin’s natural defense against moisture loss, and recapture youthful luminosity. Olay CC Cream, which hydrates for up to 24 hours with a splash of sheer color to help you say bye-bye to blotches and imperfections.

What type of food do you need in a storm preparation kit?

January 25, 2013 by Karen | 6 Comments | Filed in Review

I am avid when it comes to preparing for storms. Having lived in Oklahoma for so long, and being so close to areas devastated by Tornadoes, I saw first hand how people struggled after a storm. In the winter, we’d occasionally get a blizzard and be without power as well, once for over a week, and with three children, I don’t want to be caught unprepared. (more…)

Wishing for a KitchenAid Stand Mixer and Ooster Blender

January 23, 2013 by Karen | 8 Comments | Filed in Review

If you follow my cooking blog, you saw that I shared a post today featuring New York Style Cherry Cheesecake. I mentioned in the post that I had to use a hand mixer, because my stand mixer that I’ve had for years was damaged beyond repair in the move. For quite a while, I’ve been really hoping for a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer, but found it hard to justify the expense since I had one that was working. Now that I need a new one though, I’d like to get the one I really want. Which one is it? It’s the KitchenAid – Ultra Power Tilt-Head Stand Mixer featured in the photo above. Why this model? It offers 10 speeds, has a 4 1/2 Quart Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl, the head tilts to allow access to the mixing bowl, allows for additional attachments (making pasta from scratch, grinding meat, etc), and comes with 3 hooks. The motor is powerful enough to withstand the daily wear and tear. The negative that I’ve seen several times is it’s size and weight. This isn’t an issue for me because I have a space for it on my counter, and since I would use it daily, it would stay out on the counter. Size and weight isn’t an issue for my needs. (more…)

My dishes are sparkling clean thanks to #CascadeComplete

January 12, 2013 by Karen | 1 Comment | Filed in Review

Here is a confession for you: I HATE washing dishes. Loathe. Detest. Yuck. In fact, I practically refuse to wash dishes by hand. I make a point of double checking any new dishware or cooking utensil before I purchase it to ensure it is dishwasher safe. Everything gets loaded into the dishwasher and washed. Part of the reason is because I just get grossed out washing dishes, the other part is I honestly feel like things that have gone through the sanitizing rinse in my dishwasher are just cleaner.

One battle that Nick and I have always had since Day 1 is over my refusal to wash dishes. He has always felt like I needed to wash the dishes in the sink before I put them into the dishwasher, and then let the dishwasher sanitize them. That seems like a waste of time, energy, soap, and water to me. We have now compromised and agreed that the person who does the dishes does them their own way. Since that’s me 99.9% of the time, they go straight into the dishwasher. This has really only been a major battle when I used a detergent that wasn’t great. The dishes wouldn’t always come out crystal clean and clear, and would need a second wash. I can agree, that was a bigger waste of energy, electricity, soap, and water. However, once Cascade came out with their Cascade Complete Gel Packs with Dawn and the package clearly states, “No Pre-Rinse Required”, that was my Golden Ticket back to Bliss where dishes are concerned. No more washing by hand, then dishwasher cleaning after. I can just load the dishes in after dinner, and feel confident that they’ll be clean when I unload the machine the next day.

I also want to mention that Cascade Complete comes in powder form, liquid form, and actionpacs. It’s really just a personal preference what type you use. I have used all three forms over the years, depending on what the store had in stock. I have really become a huge fan of pods/actionpacs recently because they require no measuring. I always have a full load, so I use the same amount. Now that the kids are getting old enough to do chores and help around the house, they are easy for them to use and I don’t have to worry about finding a room full of suds.

Reduce second hand smoke with e-cigarettes

January 9, 2013 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Review

At the start of a new year, many people make resolutions or life changes that they feel are necessary to improve the quality of their life. I know I have set some goals for myself, and I have enjoyed reading those of my friends and family on social media sites, such as Facebook. It thrills me to see many people recognizing the dangers of second hand smoke, and they are resolving to make changes regarding their smoking habits. While not everyone is quite ready to give up their smoking habit completely, some have made the choice to change over to e-cigarettes.  (more…)

With Duracell Batteries, you can #TrustYourPower

I am a Green Bay Packers Fan, with that said, I have a ton of respect for most of the players in the NFL. Yes, they get paid a tremendous amount of money, but they put in hours of hard work, and only play football for a limited number of years before they need to retire for the sake of their physical health. The vast majority of players come from backgrounds where they had to work very hard to overcome hardships and obstacles to get to where they are today. One of those players is Patrick Willis, and I’d like to share with you a short video on his story: (more…)
