Getting fit with the Fitbit Blaze Our health insurance company offers Healthy Lifestyle Discounts if we complete certain activities. They offer rebates on our insurance premiums that are tax-free and can reduce the amount of our annual premium by up to $1,000 per adult.  It takes work to meet the goals, and it isn't all or nothing. 5 exercises for strength training

My oldest son is fascinated with sports. He loves watching the games, has his favorite teams, and cannot wait for his next competition, so he can compete himself. While it is more difficult for him than the "average" student athlete due to his special needs, he does play a variety of sports with Special Olympics and at his middle school. Over the years, I have spent hours researching tips and tricks to do with him to help him increase his strength - which is good for his PT/OT also - and we do strength training exercises, because he has always had low muscle tone.…

The 11 strategies for changing your behavior to reach fitness goals

The 11 strategies for changing your behavior to reach fitness goals: Whether it’s taking on the challenge of eating healthier, stopping smoking, or beginning an exercise program, relying on willpower alone will lead to nothing but failure. Setting out on a fitness journey requires strategies for achieving a change in behavior. As American Council on Exercise (ACE) master trainer Nancy L. Naternicola points out in her forthcoming book, Fitness: Steps to Success (Human Kinetics, December 2014), you need to be able to answer questions such as how you will exercise regularly instead of sporadically or how you will choose healthy…

Get in shape this Spring!

Here in New England, it feels as though winter isn't going to end. This past week, we've had high temperatures in the low 40's! We've only had a couple of really "nice" days where I've been able to throw open the windows and get some fresh air into the house. I have been doing my "winter" workout still, which consists of walking around the mall for an hour or so several times a week after I drop Nick off at work, and doing Yoga DVD's on the PS3. I am hopeful that since May has finally arrived that we'll be…

Start of the P90X Diet Program

This is NOT a sponsored or endorsed post, this is just something I am doing independently, not affiliated formally with the program. Start of the P90X Diet Program Sunday night was the weigh in, to get a "starting weight" and measurements. I am using  to keep track of everything. (Not sponsored, by the way). I chose that program because I did a google search for a free tracking program. I was looking for one that would track the weight and measurements, food diary, exercise log, and allow comments, etc. With my most recent health issues, I need to track a few…

Healthy Meal suggestions for Heart Health Month

February is Heart Health Month, and it's never too late to start thinking about things you can do to improve your lifestyle. I thought I'd gather up some Healthy Meal suggestions for Heart Health Month to help you get started planning some healthy meals. Breakfast Ideas: Over at my main blog, I featured a healthy Slow Cooker ABC Oatmeal. This particular variation contains Apples, Brown Sugar, and Cinnamon. However, you could easily change things up. For instance, if you don't want to use the slow cooker, you can cook it normally, I just like waking up to a hot and ready…

Starting a new Fitness Plan

It is the second day of the new year, and so many people are making healthier lifestyle choices. I have some posts pending featuring the various products offered by many companies, I am still working on double checking facts and information, collecting surveys, and research. Here are some things to keep in mind when starting a new fitness plan. Consult your physician before starting any program. Why?…

Photo Credit: Honey Squad 5 reasons why men burn fat faster than women: If you are female, I am sure you have figured out by now that men seem to burn fat much faster than we do. How many calories do I need?

Photo Source: Health Info Times A question I often hear asked, is how to figure out how many calories one needs to eat on a daily basis. The answer is to determine your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). I have included a formula I found online: BMR Body Weight x 15 + (moderate activity x ) Since you wish to lose weight, your target = BMR - 500 kcal So, for example, if yo weighed 200 pounds, and did 15 minutes of exercise daily, you'd do the formula as: (200 x 15) + (15 x ) so (3000) + () =…

Getting healthy with a chronic pain issue

I have Fibromyalgia. I manage it with medication, diet, and the exercises I can tolerate on the good days. This hopefully, makes up for the bad days in the long run. When I have a bad pain day, I usually cannot tolerate being out of the bed any more than is absolutely necessary.  I get up and get the kids fed, dressed, and on the bus before I collapse back into bed. Then I get them off the bus, taken care of, fed dinner, bathed, and back in bed that evening. In between I'm on the couch. They are very helpful…

10 Weight Loss Tips for the New Year

I've mentioned to some of my long-time readers in my email regarding my move from Blogger to Wordpress that I am starting Nutri-System in late January. I will be blogging my journey on my main blog, but want to post my tips and ideas here for those who might also benefit. With my Fibromyalgia I sometimes am limited in my activity due to the pain, but I try to do what I can to keep moving. I know once the pounds I gained from all these meds, etc are gone, it will help my condition too, so I'm not sitting…
